Bayliss Library hosts The Way North author event
SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - To celebrate the publication of this year’s compilation, The Way North: Collected Upper Peninsula New Works edited by Ron Riekki, a selection of the participating authors from the Eastern Upper Peninsula will read their work on Tuesday, October 29, at 7 p.m., at Bayliss Public Library.
Lake Superior State University (LSSU) and Bayliss Library, a member of Superior District Library, are co-sponsoring the event.
Come to the library to celebrate the literary talent of the EUP!
Seven area authors are participating in the program.
Poets and Sault residents Julie Brooks Barbour, Eric Gadzinski, and Mary McMyne will read from their work.
Fiction writers, Ellen Airgood of Grand Marais, Sue Harrison of Pickford, L.E. Kimball of the Newberry area and Marquette, and Janice Repka of Sault Ste. Marie, will read excerpts of their short stories.
After their readings, the authors will field questions and discuss their involvement with The Way North and the past several years of U.P. Author Tours that led to its publication.
Ellen Airgood runs a diner in Grand Marais with her husband and is the author two novels, South of Superior (2011) and Prairie Evers (2012).
Julie Brooks Barbour is the author of Small Chimes (forthcoming in 2014) and a chapbook, Come To Me and Drink (2012).
Her poems have appeared in various journals. She teaches at LSSU, where she is co-editor of the journal Border Crossing.
Dr. Eric Gadzinski has lived in the U.P. for nearly 20 years.
He was a U.P. Poet Laureate finalist this year.
His graduate degrees are from Temple University in Philadelphia.
He teaches at LSSU and has published his poems in chapbooks and various journals.
Sue Harrison was raised in the EUP and graduated summa cum laude from LSSU.
Her seven novels have won many awards and have been translated into 13 languages.
She is the recipient of this year’s LSSU Writing the U.P. Award, the first such award.
L.E. Kimball’s stories have appeared in various literary journals.
Her first novel was A Good High Place (2010) and her second novel of linked stories all set in the U.P. - one of which has been anthologized in The Way North - is in progress.
She is working on her MFA in Creative Writing from Northern Michigan University.
Mary McMyne is a fiction writer, essayist, and poet.
Her work has appeared in various publications.
Her project, re-imagining the Odysseus myth from the perspective of a Vietnam soldier’s wife, won the Faulkner Prize for a Novel-in-Progress.
She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from New York University.
She teaches at LSSU, where she is co-editor of Border Crossing.
Janice Repka’s short stories and poetry have appeared in various journals and she is the author of two novels, The Stupendous Dodgeball Fiasco (2004) and The Clueless Girl’s Guide to Being a Genius (2011).
She has an MFA in Creative Writing from McNeese State University and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
She teaches at LSSU, where she helped create the Visiting Writer Reading Series and the Superior Children’s Book Festival, and she is the co-organizer of the upcoming October 29 library event.
Barnes and Noble college bookstore will provide The Way North and other books by the participating authors for sale and signing.
The Friends of Bayliss Library will provide refreshments.
