A Sault Ste. Marie local is bringing a fresh approach to dating for the 50-plus crowd with an upcoming event that’s proving more popular with women than men.
Alysha Jordbro, founder of No Swipe Society, is organizing a Dancing Through the Decades Speed Dating event on March 29 at Mane St. Café and Lounge.
The event aims to provide an alternative to online dating apps for older adults seeking companionship.
“Hearing so many people struggle with online dating apps gave me the idea to host in-person speed dating events,” Jordbro said.
Her first event was held in January, with a sold out crowd.
“While that event was being advertised, I had several people over the age of 50 reach out to me requesting an event for their age group.”
The upcoming event is designed for 40 participants, evenly split between men and women. However, Jordbro has noticed a significant imbalance in bookings.
“The strong demand for women for this event reflects a common trend in the dating world,” she said.
“Women over 50 are often more proactive about seeking new social connections, while men in the same age group may be more hesitant to put themselves out there in a structured dating setting.”
To address this, Jordbro is implementing new strategies to attract male participants.
“I’m planning on doing more advertising in male-dominated spaces and offering discounts if they attend with a friend,” she said.
Today, No Swipe Society announced a “buy one, get one free” offer for men.
The event’s format will combine speed dating with social activities. It will begin with a cocktail hour, followed by two rounds of speed dating mixed with dancing.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet 20 potential matches, with each speed date lasting about five minutes.
Jordbro’s first event started with a 30-plus age group. Encouraged by the positive response, she expanded to cater to the 50-plus demographic.
“I figured if people in their 30s were struggling with online dating, people in their 50s must be in the same boat,” Jordbro said.
She remains optimistic about the event's potential.
“After the last event, I had multiple participants let me know that they connected with their matches and went on first dates.”
Jordbro handles most of the planning and advertising herself, with support from her husband. She credits Mane St. Café and Lounge for the assistance in creating a “wonderful evening,” for participants.
Tickets were originally $54.58, but the two for one option for men makes each ticket $27.96.
With female spots being full, a wait list option is available.
