Artist Linda King expresses her concern for the planet through her mixed media exhibition, Dwell, currently on display at the Art Gallery of Algoma.
The striking works, created using paint, fabric, paper and various found items, depict and comment on the fragility of nature.
King has chosen imagery of birds and nests, which recur throughout the exhibition, to represent the delicate world we live in.
"Another artist I know once said that birds are emissaries of an endangered ecology, and I think that's true," said King during an interview at the opening reception for Dwell Thursday evening.
"I like the fact that birds mean so many different things in different cultures. Also on my mind when I was doing this show is the word 'dominion' and how we, being very arrogant, have interpreted 'dominion over other species' as being superior to them. That's a misinterpretation. 'Dominion' really means 'to be shepherds of' or 'caretakers of', so that was in the back of my mind."
England-born, King grew up in Montreal, later moving to Newfoundland in her early 40s to attend the College of the North Atlantic.
She graduated with a degree in textile arts and now lives part time on St. Joseph Island, spending the rest in South Carolina.
Dwell remains on display at the Art Gallery of Algoma until saturday, August 2, 2008.
