Awards for Artist’s Choice, the annual juried exhibition of the Olive Craig Gallery in Alberta House Arts Center, were announced at the show’s reception on Friday, May 5.
First place went to Sault artist Jennifer Leighton for Morning Light, an acrylic on canvas. Sault artist Andreak Jump won the second place award for the second year in a row, for an oil on board lake vista titled Reflection. Third place went to Sault, Ontario photographer Brian Hunt for a black and white study titled Under the Bridge.
The first place award is $300, second place $200, and third place $100.
Honourable mention awards went to Kyung Hatfield for Sky III, a two-part oil painting; Dale Wedig for two aluminum and copper pieces; and Cindy Wedig for two works incorporating clay, oil and cold wax. Kyung Hatfield is a Sault artist and the Wedigs are from Gwinn.
The Central Savings Bank Purchase Award went to show veteran Beverley Benne for Sandhills, a watercolor. Brian Hunt’s Under the Bridge was purchased by War Memorial Hospital. Kate Marshall’s Cliff House, St. Georges, a watercolor, was purchased by Old Mission Bank; and Judy Henderson’s oil, Team Work, was purchased by Pam and Kevin Cooper. Both Hunt and Henderson are from Sault, Ontario; Kate Marshall is a Sault, Mich. artist.
The judge for Artist’s Choice was LSSU art professor Lloyd Eddy.
The Artist’s Choice exhibition will be in place in Alberta House until May 31.
Alberta House is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free of charge. Photographs and more about the artists are available in the May Alberta House News, online on the Sault Area Arts Council website.
