Arts Centre gallery benefit runs through May 23
SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - The Sault Ste. Marie (Michigan) Sunrise Rotary and Lake Superior State University’s Arts Center are co-hosting a benefit exhibit that runs through May 23, featuring 5x7 works on a theme of water.
Artists from throughout the region — including from the twin Saults, Houghton, Michigan, and from as far away as North Carolina — donated almost 100 original paintings on mixed media.
All pieces can be purchased for $50, with proceeds earmarked for Arts Center gallery programming and Sunrise Rotary outreach projects that support global clean water projects and other local initiatives, such as supplying dictionaries for third-graders, supporting competitive swimming events, and hosting winter family fun nights.
The exhibit included a juried competition in conjunction with a public reception held April 25.
First place honours, with a cash prize of $300, went to Judy Merrill-Smith for her collage, By the Shore 1954; runner up was Jeanne Tubman for Slipping Away; and first runner up laurels went to Shena Sloboda for Power Canal.
The show runs Monday-Thursday, 12-4 p.m., through May 23 in the Lake Superior State University Arts Center gallery.
