Gord Downie’s brother, director of Tragically Hip doc, headlines Algoma Fall Festival

Documentary filmmaker Mike Downie and acclaimed Anishinaabe journalist Tanya Talaga are among the confirmed headliners at this year’s Algoma Fall Festival. 

Downie, the younger brother of Tragically Hip front man Gord Downie, recently completed a four-part docuseries about the legendary band that will premiere at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Talaga — a Globe and Mail columnist and renowned author — will join Downie on Oct. 16 at the Water Tower Inn Pavilion for a wide-ranging discussion about Truth and Reconciliation and her soon-to-be-released new book, The Knowing.

This year’s festival will also feature Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman and the Cape Breton-based family group the Barra MacNeils.

“Fifty-two years in Sault Ste. Marie!” said Tiana Trutenko, president of the festival association, in a news release. “Beautiful music, fantastic food and art for the soul. October is full of excellence and entertainment!”

The festival began in 1972 and has featured prominent Canadian artists over the years including the National Ballet of Canada, Bruce Cockburn, Natalie McMaster, Jann Arden and The Tenors.

Sault Ste. Marie born and raised Italian Canadian chef Emily Richards will share a taste of selections from her best-selling cookbooks on Oct. 18 and host 'Ricotta Gnocchi with Emily' on Oct. 19.

Gifted musician and songwriter Amy Sky will lead a personal songwriting workshop for adults on Oct. 17.

On Oct. 25, 6 Hearts will perform their unique and captivating blend of East Coast contemporary and traditional music.
