Gia Diamond has a birthday and everyone is invited to join the celebration on Saturday, Nov. 5 as Divas N Disguyz presents Soo-Lebrities at the Canadian Night Club.

Most people in the Sault are aware of Gia Diamond, our own fabulous drag queen often found aboard the Sault Pride float during the Rotary Community Day Parade.

Behind the sequins and fake lashes is Bob Hughes, and his career as an entertainer began on a dare.

“I was always involved in theatre and stuff like that, but this was kind of a dare that turned into a career over the last 30 years,” Hughes told SooToday.

The very witty Hughes often takes Gia Diamond on the road, performing in casinos and clubs across Canada and the United States.

And most recently, Hughes' feminine side got in touch with her dark side for the film Faccioun, a trailer for which can be seen here.

He said the biggest misconception about drag queens is that they want to be women, which is not the case.

“I see how women get treated all the time. This is more of an homage to women,” he said. “My whole person was shaped by women – my mom, women on TV, Wonder Woman. All my idols are women. And I absolutely wouldn’t be the person I am without my mom.”

In addition to the evening’s host Gia Diamond, Saturday’s drag show will also feature Timothy Murphy as Gina who, funny enough, is also celebrating his birthday that evening.

Gia and Gina have something special planned for attendees as the pair teams up on stage for the very first time.

Other performers include April Evangelista and Teddy.

“(Audience members) can expect to laugh, that’s always number one,” said Hughes. “That’s why the tag line is: ‘Rated R for ridiculously funny’.”

Tickets for the show are $20 each and are available for purchase at the front desk of the Canadian Motor Hotel.

Doors open at 8 p.m. Show time is 9:30 p.m.
