Try a Sport Day kicks off in Sault (12 photos)

The city’s free event allowed participants to try out different sports, including pickleball, soccer, tennis, and baseball

The city’s Try a Sport Day turned out to be a huge success as community members of all ages had the chance to test out different sports at several city-run athletic facilities.

Saturday’s free event offered several sports for locals to try, and the activities were evenly spread out throughout the morning and afternoon so participants could attend more than one.

The sports included pickleball, soccer, disc golf, tennis, ultimate frisbee, baseball, and volleyball.

Pickleball was among the more popular choices today as all eight courts at the Elliot Sports Complex were filled up with residents eager to give the activity a try.

Similar to tennis, pickleball has grown in popularity among older people, but participants of all ages were on the courts today to test their abilities.

Just up the hill from pickleball was soccer, where kids received advice from several instructors on various techniques like kicking, passing, and blocking.

Kim Powley was volunteering for several different sports today, including soccer, and she’s thrilled to see everyone getting out of the house and trying their hand at an assortment of leisure activities.

“I think it’s great for them,” she said. “I love that there are so many children out here showing their participation skills. It’s great to be socializing. Everything seems to be getting back into the swing of things which is awesome.”

Meanwhile, ultimate frisbee sparked some interest for several locals who made their way to Rosedale Park this afternoon.

Adrian Colak, an ultimate frisbee instructor, said he’s been having a fun time getting to share the ins and outs of the sport with newcomers.

“It’s nice to see people out and trying all the sports,” he said. “Ultimate frisbee isn’t as popular as other sports like hockey, soccer, and football, so it’s nice to introduce sports like this to get more engagement from the community.”

Colak helps run ultimate frisbee clinics at Rosedale Park on Wednesdays.

Justin Thomson, another ultimate frisbee enthusiast, encourages everyone to consider giving the sport a go.

“It’s a good form of exercise that’s very low impact,” he said. “It’s a fun mixed sport featuring all ages and both genders on the field at the same time. It’s a real sense of community that way. It’s easy to pick up and play, and there’re lots of strategies involved.”

The breezy conditions on a warmer, overcast day helped make the event an overall success.
