GALLERY: Snowbirds show off impressive tricks along waterfront

The "oohs" and "ahhs" were the second loudest noise along the waterfront on Saturday as thousands of Saultites were treated to an incredible show by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. 

As part of this year's Bushplane Days, the military's air demonstration team flew over both sides of the border and along the St. Marys River — showing off all sorts of aerial tricks and formations for nearly 30 minutes. 

The Snowbirds were also joined by a special guest: Sault Ste. Marie’s very own Major Dion Marson — call sign "Gottem" — who roared through the skies for several high-speed passes in a CF-18 fighter jet.

On Friday morning, Marson was spotted taking his jet for a cruise over the downtown core ahead of the big performance today.

His proud parents Dionisia and Paul told SooToday he flew over a number of particular areas yesterday — including their camp in Batchawana Bay. 

"We've been asking Dion to come to the Sault and fly his jet, and he can't until there's a good reason to," Dionisia said. "We're blessed that he was able to come."

"He flew over the Legion to give respect to the veterans," Paul added. "He wiggled his wings to give a little wave and salute."

Observers may have noticed that only eight Snowbirds took to the skies today, one fewer than usual.

During Saturday's meet-and-greet, Captain Caitie Clapp told SooToday her plane was having mechanical issues at the 2 p.m. takeoff, leaving her grounded.

"It happens from time to time," she said.

Bushplane Days continues this afternoon as the Snowbirds will return at 5 p.m. for a special meet-and-greet.

The festivities will carry over tomorrow with more games, simulators, and thrills as the MNR waterbomber and Twin Otter demonstrations will take to the water and skies at noon.
