The welcoming vibes of a summer barbecue filled the Roberta Bondar Pavilion on Wednesday as Community Living Algoma celebrated their 70th anniversary in grand fashion.
In fact, before the hot dogs and burgers even had a chance to hit the grill, a lineup of hungry locals had already formed outside the big tent.
Hundreds ended up turning out to enjoy the light August breeze while they were treated to free food, refreshments, and games.
The first 70 people who arrived to the event even received a special anniversary t-shirt.
Community Living Algoma provides supports and services to more than 546 people in the Algoma District who have intellectual disabilities or are on the autism spectrum, according to a release from the organization.
"The Community Living movement, in Algoma, was founded in 1954 by families who were committed to ensuring that their loved ones had a place not only in the community but as active citizens in the community," they wrote.
Live music was also provided by Matthew James, an Uxbridge, Ont. native who is quickly establishing a name for himself in town since moving here two years ago.
SooToday will have more on James later this month.
