GALLERY: Onam festival celebrated by hundreds at Marconi

Hosted by the Sault Malayalee Association, annual festivities included a feast, music and dancing on Sunday

More than 300 members of Sault Ste. Marie's Malayalee community packed the Marconi Multicultural Event Centre for this year's Onam celebration.

Onam, a festival that celebrates harvest season, is enjoyed around this time every year across the globe. These residents come from the Indian state of Kerala, located in southwestern India.

Sunday's activities included a traditional Onam Sadhya (feast) with authentic Kerala cuisine, traditional music, dance, art and traditional Onam games for all ages.

“Onam is one of the most cherished festivals celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Malayalee community across the globe," wrote Jinse Sunny, Sault Malayalee Association general secretary in a release. "It marks the harvest season and embodies the spirit of unity, prosperity, and togetherness. Our organization takes immense pride in organizing a grand Onam Celebration and this year's event promises to be a memorable one for all attendees."
