GALLERY: Greyhounds play big brother at event for local youth

Players and staff with the Soo Greyhounds organization collaborated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie for a memorable evening at Thomson Farms on Monday.

Local youth had the chance to team up one on one with a Greyhounds player and take part in a number of fall-themed activities, which included a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin picking, a corn cannon, s'mores around the fire, basketball, pushup contests, giant connect 4, as well as swings and slides.

The event was one of Big Brothers Big Sisters Monthly Big Bunch Group programs, which provides fun opportunities for youth who are on the wait list for a mentor.

Karen Hurley-Melcher, the local activities coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters, says the organization currently has 25 children, mostly males, who are on that wait list.

“If mentoring isn't for a specific person, Big Brothers Big Sisters has other volunteer opportunities to help ignite the power and potential of our young people in our community,” she told SooToday.
