'History of Violence' leads 2006 Directors Guild of Canada Awards
TORONTO, ONTARIO - (Oct. 15, 2005) - The 2006 Directors Guild of Canada Awards gala brought out the nation's top filmmakers, industry players and acting talents to last night's event at The Carlu in Toronto to honour the best work created by DGC members last year.
The star-studded celebration kicked off with a cocktail reception before funnyman Peter Keleghan inaugurated the fifth annual awards ceremony.
The moving tribute to Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Allan King by director Sturla Gunnarsson highlighted the evening.
King pioneered documentary filmmaking with his ground-breaking works and poignant actuality dramas (Memory for Max, Claire, Ida and Company), and has had an equally impressive award-winning career in drama filmmaking.
"I should be giving the award to the DGC," says King. "The DGC gave me a decade of experience on managing groups - the best political experience in the world. The management of groups is the key to all filmmaking."
The DGC's Distinguished Service Award went to Crawford Hawkins, managing director of the British Columbia District Council recognizing his contributions to the Guild and in developing the BC film industry.
Awards presenters included: Jeremy Podeswa, Tonya Lee Williams, Peter Outerbridge, Wendy Crewson, Paul Gross, Martha Burns, Ashley Legget, Michael Seater and Megan Follows.
A total of 19 team and individual craft awards were presented to DGC members whose incredible work continues to fortify the quality of filmmaking in Canada.
