LETTER: Spinning our wheels waiting for new recycling bin

SooToday received the following Letter to the Editor from reader Glenna Davey on the topic of recycling bins:

I want to know how long must we wait for our recyclable garbage to be replaced by the city.

We've been waiting since the month of July for a replacement order recyclable bin. We had a visit from a sanitation department worker but he has no parts, no spares, nothing.

They claim because of COVID, there are no bins.

For a city with insurmountable amounts of snow, and rain, and constant use, you would think the City would have calculated the need for extra.

I would think that many people by now would require a receptacle, because of constant usage.

To worsen matters, the wheels, made of plastic, do not stand up to our kind of weather. They crack in the cold and after a while, holes are bored into the plastic.

Salt doesn't help either.

Being that the use of plastics is being banned all over, perhaps this lightweight mechanism should be changed to a rubber wheel that can be handled in heavy snow.

Plastic is not a good thing for the Sault. Perhaps fibreglass!

But please, get more bins and parts. It may cost more, but at least they last longer. This also applies to grocery carts. The wheels should be bigger, and have wheels where you can easily push them through snow.
