SooToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Glenna Davey in response to the comments she received on her first letter that ran Sunday.
I wish to answer to criticism about shutting the city down.
I have lived here all my life, I know what storms are like in this city. I was not implying that people should not be paid if they don't show up for work, when there are no public transportation choices!
A lot of places shut down due to heavy, continuous snow fall. There were transport trucks, and cars stopped on hills, and roads! City hall, the public library, and school buses were cancelled. That in itself set the bar for all city services to follow suit, including, all working people.
The snow plows had a very heavy task, of cleaning streets, cars on the road were a hazard our city workers could avoid, and plan accordingly!
I have found, that people are not as courteous to their neighbours, like years ago, we seemed more relaxed, and willing to lend a hand, maybe it's just frustration with everyday living, high prices, job losses, and the thoughts of hydro and heating bills and living costs!
Prices of goods and services mounting daily. There are many seniors in our neighbourhood, I was trying to make a point, that shovelling is hard on the heart, nothing more. I'm sorry you misunderstood what I meant, it was to bring attention to those who have no family to help out, that was the gist of it!
