SooToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Glenna Davey in support of city-funded warming centres.
I've just read that the city will not offer warming centres for the homeless. I suppose making this decision is easier from the comfort of a warm room.
The city has admitted, that there is a need for more affordable housing. Where is this phenomenon located? New builds are charging huge rents. I am concerned about the extreme cold days we get when winter sets in; it has even snowed in May.
May I ask why the GFL Gardens isn't used as a warning Centre, where more people can be out of the cold? You probably are going to say the ice is a problem, because it would be colder. But not necessarily. You could utilize the top spaces, and lobby.
Schools, which are supported by taxpayers, could use gyms, as warming centres. Plus there could be showers available in the high schools as well.
If you don't want to accommodate the homeless, then that's on you. It is far beyond my belief that low-income housing isn't already underway in this city.
