Fall-you-can-eat: Kiwanis pancake breakfasts making sweet comeback

Spring-time breakfasts were rescheduled to the next three weekends after the Sugar Shack encountered potable water issues earlier this year

Mornings just got a whole lot sweeter as the popular all-you-can-eat pancake breakfasts are making a highly anticipated return to the Sugar Shack.

For the next three weekends, the Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie will invite residents to come out to Fifth Line and enjoy the fall colours while savouring the familiar tastes of homemade pancakes, deep fried sausages, and maple syrup — courtesy of Fallen Leaves.

The club was forced to postpone nine of their breakfasts last spring when the Conservation Authority-owned Sugar Shack encountered a potable water issue that required them to re-drill their well. It resulted in a number of water-related concerns, including the shutdown of on-site washrooms.

Typically serving between 3,500 and 4,000 guests across nine dates every spring, program coordinator Brad Frechette told SooToday last February they were anticipating a fundraising hit of $15,000. The organization supports a variety of child and youth programs in town.

Now that the Sugar Shack is back in business, volunteers with the Sault Kiwanis Club hopes to make some of their lost revenue back with six upcoming pancake breakfasts in late September and early October.

"Fall-you-can-eat" breakfasts will take place at 1100 Fifth Line East on Sept. 21-22 and 28-29, as well as Oct. 5-6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

Adults are $15, seniors 65 and older are $12, kids between six and 12 are $6, and kids five and under are free. Cash, Debit and Credit is now available.

The club estimates they’ve served more than 200,000 pancakes since they started hosting the breakfasts 30 years ago.
