Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.
On this week’s episode: When you’re about to hoist the Stanley Cup for the first time, what really goes through your mind?
For Michael Amadio, it was all about staying on his feet.
“I just wanted not to fall on the ice with it,” says the 27-year-old forward, a member of the Stanley Cup champion Las Vegas Golden Knights. “I think that was the only thing I was thinking of.”
He didn’t fall, of course. And as Amadio skated with his teammates on the night of June 13 — the Cup high over his head — friends and family were glued to their TVs in his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, and in North Bay, where Amadio starred for The Battalion during his junior hockey days.
“I don’t even remember the moment,” he tells Inside the Village. “It goes by so fast.”
What Amadio does remember — and will never forget — is the phone call he made from the ice: to his grandmother back home, his biggest fan, who watched him skate from when he was a little boy.
“I think she was at every game, she would always be there supporting me,” Amadio says. “She stayed up late to watch the game, so just to hear her voice was a pretty special moment.”
This interview is pretty special, too. It’s not every day that a Stanley Cup winner stops by our podcast.
