As part of Algoma University’s efforts to support students financially through this challenging year, the John Rhodes Scholarship Planning Committee has come up with a unique way to ensure the John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner is able to proceed.
The Planning Committee is inviting guests to attend a special virtual premiere called Through the Years; a Celebration of Celebrations which will feature honourees from the past 19 years, taking place on Dec. 3, 2020, at 7 p.m.
Guests will be treated to an exclusive premiere from the comfort of their own homes as they look back through time to honour those who have given so much of their lives to build community, help others, and seek to shape the next generation of leaders. Each guest will receive a special premiere package with access to online viewing, an audience gift bag, and a commemorative souvenir booklet.
"The John Rhodes Scholarship Committee is pleased to be able to present this virtual event,” said committee volunteer Robert Cohen. “Students need financial support to continue their studies, especially during these challenging times. We felt it was important to continue to raise funds for the John Rhodes Scholarship, and help students in need by designating a portion of the proceeds to the Emergency Bursary. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate all of the people we have honoured over the years. This will be an event you don't want to miss.”
The John R. Rhodes Scholarship, valued at $3,000, is offered to a high school graduate who embodies the integrity, leadership, and commitment to community service demonstrated by Rhodes throughout his life as a broadcaster, community member, and politician. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years, providing the recipient maintains a minimum average of 80 per cent each academic year.
“Seeing this year’s event come to fruition speaks to how our community continues to come together to support those in need,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Asima Vezina. “This has been an incredibly challenging time for students, many who have not yet recovered from the financial losses of layoffs and many of their families now struggling to support their children’s dreams of a university degree. These scholarships matter, often serving as the catalyst for a student to obtain that university degree. I want to thank everyone who is able to purchase a ticket in support of the dinner, your generosity at this time is important - from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”
