The GLC is the official home of the Algoma Thunderbirds and is located on the campus of Algoma University at 1520 Queen Street East. Built in 1992, and named after Algoma University’s first-ever Athletics Director, George Leach, the GLC provides Algoma University students and community members with access to fitness equipment that promotes a healthy lifestyle alternative. Today, the GLC also hosts regional, provincial, and national level competitions, bringing the highest level of sport to Sault Ste. Marie.
As of March 2015, the GLC opened a brand new state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot expansion, in addition to its 39,000-square-foot pre-existing structure. This new weight room fitness space features new strength equipment from Hammar Strength, cardio equipment from Life Fitness, and the only Life Fitness Synrgy Functional Trainer in Sault Ste. Marie! The expansion also boasts three new aerobic studios with aerobics equipment. These large spaces overlook the campus and provide lots of natural lighting. One of these studios has also been converted into a Spin Studio with 15 new digital spin bikes.
The gymnasium or field house features three regulation court surfaces, which accommodate a wide range of athletic activities such as badminton, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. The gym area is surrounded by a 1/9th mile indoor walking and jogging track.
Outside of the GLC, members can utilize the new outdoor recreation area, which opened in July of 2016. The space features two restored, enclosed, regulation size tennis courts as well as basketball nets. The GLC also boasts a sauna, change rooms with lockers, varsity change rooms, and private change rooms for refereeing officials.
