Our History
The original Spadoni's dates back to 1918 when its founder Adolfo Spadoni started a bicycle repair shop on the corner of Cathcart and James St. Several years later, he purchased the neighbouring building at 185 James St. The building was a small two-story structure. The original business operated as James Street Hardware and Furniture Co. for approximately 80 years where the location went through innovation and construction during its time and finally became what is known as 185 James Street.
After the business closed in 1991, it sadly stood vacant for 5 years. This is when the current owner, Adolfo's grandson, Alan Spadoni decided to carry on with his grandfather's legacy and reopened the building in 1996. When he ventured into opening the building again, he started with garage sale items, later adding used furniture. The business thrived, thus transitioning into a completely filled new furniture and appliance store that has been newly renovated; bringing it back to the glorious, magnificent building it once was with all its shine. Spadoni's now displays over 20,000 square feet of furniture, appliances, and other household goods.
The building itself contains beautiful craftsmanship and history, such as Sault Ste. Marie's oldest operating and licensed elevator dating back to 1948 where Alan's father Alfio helped with laying the elevator's foundation. The now four generations of Spadoni men have always been known for customer service and still to this day when you enter the store you will see Alan and/or his son Angus greeting and helping customers just like his grandfather and father are so fondly remembered for. When you come to Spadoni's Furniture and Appliances, you still get that small-town customer service that was offered years ago which makes the shopping experience unique. This is the kind of service that you only receive from a locally owned and operated business dating back four generations who have always strived and continue to do so to bring you the best customer service experience possible for you to take away and share with the world.
