Who We Are

Since 1987, Superior Adult Learning (formerly “Program Read”) has helped adults in our community build the literacy and basic skills they need to gain confidence, improve independence, and secure employment. We are a non-profit organization, led by a volunteer Board of Directors, a small team of employees and volunteer tutors.

All services are free of charge to eligible Learners.

Who We Serve

Ontario residents over the age of 19 who:

  • need literacy and essential skills support to find or keep a job, meet everyday
  • needs or move on to further education/training
  • have functional listening and speaking English language skills
  • are out-of-school
  • have 3 to 5 hours per week to dedicate to learning

Why It Matters

Helping people gain the skills and confidence they need to participate in our community is the right thing to do, but it also strengthens us.

Lower levels of literacy are linked to:

  • poverty
  • poor health
  • unemployment and underemployment

Higher levels of literacy have a positive effect on our economy and can reduce costs to our health care, social service, and justice systems.

What We Do

We offer instruction, tutoring and self-directed resources to help Learners develop key competencies that are important in everyday life, including:

  • Finding and using information
  • Communicating ideas and information
  • Understanding and using numbers
  • Using digital technology
  • Managing learning
  • Engaging with others

Instruction can occur in our office, online, or in other community locations that have access to meeting space and WiFi access. All services are FREE to eligible learners.

How We Do It

  • Work with Learners to confirm long-term independence, employment, and/or education goals
  • Assess each Learner’s essential skills
  • Develop an individualized plan to help learners build the skills they need to achieve their goals
  • Provide individual and small group instruction and tutoring based on a Learner’s plan.
  • Assess Learners’ progress and adjust plans as required.
  • Refer Learners to other services.
