The Christmas Cheer Program of Sault Ste. Marie and Surrounding Area endeavours to provide a Christmas grocery gift card and presents for the families who need assistance.
The Program was developed and implemented by volunteers of the community. Funding is provided through the Sault Star Santa Fund, plus dedicated companies and organizations, various Ministries, office departments, and other charitable fund-raising events ( eg.Toystock, Stuff A Bus, Greyhound Teddy Bear Toss)
The first community Christmas Cheer program was in 1969 under the direction of the Maycourt Club of Sault Ste. Marie and sponsored by the Community Council for Social Development of the United Way. Prior to 1969, various clubs and organizations provided food and gifts for needy families within our city. As the need increased, the Maycourt Club brought together representatives from the clubs, churches, and agencies to explore the possibility of a united Community Christmas Cheer Program. It was agreed that the joint efforts would better serve the community. Members of the Maycourt took on the
tremendous task of organizing and implementing such a program. Such organization and dedication demonstrated in bringing this program into being, are to be highly commended. Many of the original groups have remained very active participants (Firefighters Association, Militia, churches).
The Christmas Cheer Program, which involves Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area from Batchewana to Bruce Mines has greatly grown. In 2023, 2081 families were served.
