There’s a saying which states ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same.’
In a way, that could apply to the following story.
The Sault’s Katie and Dan Elliott stood up for their cousin’s wedding Aug. 1, but were unable to attend the ceremony as they had planned, as the wedding was held in Sault, Mich. and the Canada-U.S. border was closed to non-essential travel due to COVID-19 restrictions.
However, they were determined not to let the border closure ruin the day.
As the wedding party had its photos taken near the Museum Ship Valley Camp on the Sault, Michigan waterfront, the Elliotts situated themselves along the Sault, Ont. waterfront near the Art Gallery of Algoma with a ‘Wish We Were There’ banner.
“The bridal party were able to see each other at least, with binoculars,” wrote Don Elliott, Katie and Dan’s father, in an email to SooToday.
Fast forward to December.
COVID still hangs over us, the border is still closed, but though the weather has changed since August, the Elliott family’s spirit remains the same.
Katie and Dan revisited the Sault, Ont. waterfront Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve) and greeted their Michigan family members with a ‘Wish You Were Here’ sign.
“They met my family at the waterfront again. It was fun to at least see our family members, albeit through binoculars,” Don wrote, the Elliotts coming up with a different and creative way to see distanced family members without using Zoom.
