Sault Ste. Marie MPP Ross Romano has issued a statement regarding the provincial government's most recent lockdown announcement.

Premier Doug Ford confirmed today Ontario will go into lockdown on Dec. 26 (Boxing Day). Areas north of Sudbury will be locked down for 14 days, while areas south of Sudbury will be locked down for 28 days.

The full statement from Romano reads as follows:

“The health and safety of Ontario, the North and Sault Ste. Marie is our government’s top priority. I know how difficult a lockdown will be on our businesses, however; we must be committed to doing whatever it takes to keep you and your family safe from this deadly virus.

There is a significant risk of inter-provincial travel, and that people infected unknowingly with COVID-19 will only increase the spread across the province. That is why our government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and other health experts, is imposing a provincewide shutdown to go into effect on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020 at 12:01 a.m. It is important to note that here in Northern Ontario, this lockdown will last 14 days. The impacts of these time-limited shutdowns will continue to be evaluated throughout the 14 days.

The government recognizes that small businesses impacted by these necessary public health measures will require additional support so they can continue serving their communities and help their employees. That is why the government is announcing the new Ontario Small Business Support Grant, which will provide a minimum of $10,000 and up to $20,000 to eligible small business owners to help navigate this challenging period.

Everyone here in Sault Ste. Marie have shown admirable community spirit over these last months, and I have never been prouder to be part of this incredible community. We have all made sacrifices for the safety and health of our neighbours and loved ones. That fight is not over. The bottom line is that we will only get out of this if we work together and follow the best scientific and medical advice.

So please, remember to stay home, wash your hands, wear a mask and please don’t gather with individuals outside your household this Christmas and holiday season.”
