A news release issued today by the Sault Ste Marie Airport Development Corporation (SSMADC) states that Sault airport revenue is down by more than $2 million since the beginning of the pandemic.

“The recovery in passenger levels already appears to have plateaued," said SSMADC President and CEO Terry Bos in the release. "Although it was encouraging to hear on the weekend that Minister Garneau after seven months is finally going to meet with the airlines about support for the aviation sector, there has yet to be any discussion in regards to relief for airports. The first seven months of this pandemic has already reduced the SSMADC’s revenue by $2.4 Million.”

Currently, Air Canada Express offers just one flight from the Sault daily, and Bearskin Airlines is operating four daily flights Monday through Friday and two flights Sunday. Porter Airlines stated this week that the airline will be grounded until at least Feb. 11.

A total of 11,396 passengers have passed through the Sault Ste. Marie Airport from April to October, marking a 91 per cent decrease the SSMADC release states.

Passenger levels over the past seven months are as follows:
