The downward trend continues for Ontario’s daily COVID-19 case count with 308 (a 1.5 per cent increase) new cases reported today.
The numbers for the past three days have been the lowest reported by the province in a month with most of April at or above 400 cases per day. Many days in April the province reported an increase above 500 cases per day.
Recoveries are also continuing to rise with another 359 reported today.
However, the province has consistently reported 30 - 50 deaths per day, including another 35 today.
The deaths reported today include one person between the age of 40 and 59, six people between the ages of 60 and 79, and 28 people over the age of 80.
There are now 1,027 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, including 194 in intensive care and 147 on ventilators.
There are 3,407 total cases reported in health care workers, which is about 16.6 per cent of the total cases confirmed in Ontario.
Since January 15, Ontario has reported 20,546 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, of those 15,131 people have recovered (73.6 per cent), and 1,669 people have died (8.1 per cent).
The Ministry of Long-Term Care daily report states there are 174 outbreaks at Ontario long-term care facilities including 2,725 confirmed cases in residents, 1,691 in staff, and 1,235 resident deaths. Ontario has included 796 of those long-term care resident deaths in the total number of COVID-19 deaths it has reported.
The Ministry reports there are 57 outbreaks now resolved. Public Health Ontario reportes 245 outbreaks (cumulative) at long-term care facilities, 95 at retirement homes, and 73 at hospitals.
In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 80. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 76.7 per 100,000 people.
According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to May 9, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:
• Algoma Public Health - 16 cases, rate of 14 per 100,000 population
• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 13.9 per 100,000 population
• Porcupine Health Unit - 64, rate of 76.7 per 100,000 population (a 65th case was announced today)
• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 59 cases, rate of 29.6 per 100,000 population
• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000
• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 80 cases, rate of 53.3 per 100,000 population
• Northwestern Health Unit - 15 cases, rate of 17.1 per 100,000 population
According to the report, in Northeastern Ontario, there have been 175 confirmed cases, and the rate is 31.3 per 100,000 population. In Northwestern Ontario, there have been 95 cases and a rate of 40. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 138.2.
