Ontario reports 258 new COVID-19 cases today

75 per cent of the province's total confirmed cases have now recovered

Ontario is reporting its lowest increase in daily cases since March 29 with 258 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases today.

The province’s public health agency is also reporting 359 recoveries and 33 deaths related to COVID-19 this morning.

The most recently reported deaths include one person between the age of 40 and 59, eight people between the ages of 60 and 79, and 24 people over the age of 80.

Testing continues to rise with 17,429 tests completed in a day and another 17,578 tests backlogged awaiting results.

The province issued an order at the end of April requiring all staff and residents of long-term care facilities to be tested. The deadline for that testing is tomorrow (May 15).

There are now 1,026 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 184 people in intensive care and 141 patients on ventilators.

The province has confirmed a total of 21,494 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario since Jan. 15. Of those, 16,204 (75 per cent) are reported recovered, and 1,798 people have died (8.4 per cent).

The daily epidemiological report put out by Public Health Ontario includes data submitted up to 4 p.m. the previous day.

The Ministry of Long-Term Care is reporting 185 active COVID-19 outbreaks in Ontario long term care facilities with 2,501 confirmed cases in residents and 1,668 cases in staff. There have been 1,308 deaths of residents as a result of the virus and five staff have died.

Public Health Ontario has included only 814 of those resident deaths in its total number of reported COVID-19 fatalities.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 78. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 77.9 per 100,000 people.

According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to May 13, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:

• Algoma Public Health - 16 cases, rate of 14 per 100,000 population

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 14.6 per 100,000 population

• Porcupine Health Unit - 65, rate of 77.9 per 100,000 population

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 59 cases, rate of 29.6 per 100,000 population

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 78 cases, rate of 52 per 100,000 population

• Northwestern Health Unit - 17 cases, rate of 19.4 per 100,000 population

According to the report, in Northeastern Ontario, there have been 177 confirmed cases, and the rate is 31.6 per 100,000 population. In Northwestern Ontario, there have been 95 cases and a rate of 40. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 144.6.
