The Sault's unemployment rate has improved over the last three months, according to a report by the Algoma Workforce Investment Corporation (AWIC).
It sat at a high of 11.1 per cent in July, after having climbed significantly in March due to COVID-19.
The employment rate is sitting at 60.2 per cent, rebounding from a low of 49.2 per cent in May 2020.
The national and provincial rates have also rebounded from earlier lows, but they are still lower than previous norms, according to the report.
The report from AWIC states, "Caution should be taken in saying this is the beginning of a full recovery. As the economic realities and impacts of the COVID measures take hold, it will be a long time before our economies get back to pre-pandemic levels."
Employment in Sault Ste. Marie fell to 40,400 in January from November's high of 41,500. While this is decrease over the last three months, it is a significant rebound from May's low of 32,600.
Sault Ste. Marie’s monthly Labour Force Survey estimates are based on a sample of the working age population (the population 15 years and above). For example, the results in a typical month would be based on the survey completions of 205 households and these would be extrapolated for the entire working population of 66,500.
