On Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canadian seniors who are eligible for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) will receive a one-time, tax-free payment during the week of July 6.

Seniors who qualify for the OAS pension will receive a payment of $300, while GIS recipients will get an additional $200. Allowance recipients will also receive $500.

Seniors do not need to apply for the one-time payment.

Dr. Theresa Tam presented a new report on the novel coronavirus in Canada Thursday, including new short-term projections that say between 157 and 1,857 more Canadians could die of COVID-19 in the next 11 days. 

In other national news, Hockey Canada has lifted its ban on sanctioned activities and is allowing the country's 13 member organizations to individually determine when it's safe to return to action.

In provincial news, Public Health Ontario reported 356 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, along with 45 deaths - the highest number of deaths reported in a single day since May 11 when the province reported 56 deaths.

Premier Doug Ford announced Thursday that his government would be forming a new advisory group, the Premier's Council on Equality of Opportunity, to help young, vulnerable people overcome social and economic barriers amid COVID-19.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says a decision on the province's second stage of reopening could come within the next week.
