COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

In national news, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to continue his push for a co-ordinated global response to cushion the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world's poorest countries.

Canada's Defence Department is being accused of using the COVID-19 pandemic to withhold information from Parliament.  

In provincial news, Public Health Ontario reported 338 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, along with 19 deaths and 327 recoveries. 

The province announced $150 million in funding Wednesday to improve broadband and cellular access in rural and remote communities. Watch the announcement and read the news release here.  

The Ontario Long Term Care Association says the federal government must do more to help provinces prepare long-term care homes for the next wave of COVID-19.

In local news, Sault Area Hospital says it's planning to roll out “a safe, cautious reopen and reschedule of services,” including beginning June 9, with plans for medical services to return to approximately 75 per cent of its normal case activity by July.

A recent survey conducted by Nature and Outdoor Tourism Ontario showed if seasonal tourism businesses weren’t allowed to operate for May and June, they would lose 40 to 50 per cent of their income. About 30 per cent of tourism businesses in the north said they believe they are facing permanent closure.
