COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

In provincial news, Ontario will be opening up backcountry camping in Ontario Parks June 1, including access points, paddle and portage routes and hiking trails. Day-use activities are being expanded to include picnic and off-leash pet areas. Crown land is also re-opening for camping,

Ontario Parks will also start collecting regular fees for day-use and backcountry camping. 

Public Health Ontario reported 323 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday. The province also reported its highest number of tests processed in a single day with more than 20,000 tests in 24 hours. 

On Saturday, the province announced that it's extending the suspension of time-of-use price for electricity and introducing the COVID-19 Recovery Rate of 12.8 cents per kilowatt-hour, which will be automatically applied to all time-of-use customers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

The fixed electricity price will be in place from June 1 to October 31. 

In local news, Garden River First Nation will lift access restrictions and remove COVID-19 screening checkpoints June 16, but could reinstate restricted access if there's an increase in COVID-19 cases.

Total confirmed cases by area of residence: 

  • 17 in Sault Ste. Marie and area, with evidence of community spread
  • 1 in central and east Algoma
  • 3 in Elliot Lake and area
  • 0 in north Algoma
