Air Canada service between Sault Ste. Marie and Toronto will resume with five flights a week starting June 22, the airline has announced.
Bearskin Airlines has been the only carrier offering regularly scheduled flights in and out of the Sault since Porter dropped its service in March and Air Canada flights ended Apr. 1, both because of the COVID-19 emergency.
But Bearskin drops into the Sault on its way between Thunder Bay and Sudbury, and roughly half of Bearskin's scheduled flights are currently being cancelled because of low demand, Terry Bos, chief executive officer of Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corp., tells SooToday.
Bos says that starting June 22, an Air Canada flight from Toronto will arrive in the Sault around 10:30 a.m. five days a week, returning 20 to 25 minutes later.
Bos expects that arrangement will likely remain in place through July, with potential for additional Air Canada flights to be added in August if demand increases, either running seven days a week or perhaps two flights a day.
Air Canada's temporary halt on Sault service was originally planned until April 30 but was extended to May 30.
