With Remembrance Day coming on Tuesday, this week's edition of Remember This? reminds us of the toll of war and the cost of freedom.

The Sault Ste. Marie Museum offers some statistics to think on:

************************
Freedom

The freedom to live our lives, the freedom to choose where we live, where we work and so many others

Europe - 1914

The Great War, the war to end all wars. Over 600,000 Canadians answered the call to serve King and Country, many thought they would be home for Christmas. After four grueling years of battle, the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. The troops returned home, however not all. 65,000 gave their lives for our freedom

Europe - 1939

Canadians answer the call again. Over 1,000,000 Canadian men and women served our country and fought to once again secure the freedom that we enjoy, after four long years of conflict they returned home, 45,000 of these brave men and women paid the ultimate sacrifice

Korea - 1950

Once again Canadians go to war to fight against oppression. 27,000 Canadians served in Korea, 516 of these brave souls gave their lives

Peacekeeping Missions

Canadians have been involved in Peacekeeping Missions around the world since 1956. More than 100,000 service men and women have served. Over 100 have paid the ultimate price

Afghanistan - 2001

Once again Canadian men and women answered the call. Too many have paid the ultimate sacrifice – 158 Canadians were killed in battle in this war.

So you see,

Freedom really isn't free.
