Remember This? A fancy affair

The leaves have changed colour and back in the day, that meant it was time for local ladies and gents to break out their ball gowns and cummerbunds. That’s right, fall meant social season in the Sault. And it was kind of a big deal.

That’s right, fall meant social season in the Sault.

And it was kind of a big deal.

The Sault Ste. Marie Museum takes us back to the Roaring 20s in the article below:

The Social Season — A Time Past

The social season always began in the fall of the year with various groups hosting concerts, socials and Balls.

The Regiment hosted the Artillery Ball, the Pipe Band had the Tartan Ball, St. Luke’s young people provided the Snow Ball.

In the mid 1920s attendance at a fancy affair cost $1 per couple, 50 cents for an additional lady.

Dancing began at 9:00 pm and a light lunch was served at 11 p.m.

Even the schools held Annual Balls. Some of these Annual Balls continued into the 1960 and some into the 1970s.

Some of the events in later years were by invitation only.

Your ticket always listed the name of the band or orchestra who would be performing, all the music was provided by live bands—no DJs back then!
