Tonight on 'Closer Look': A crackdown on so-called scam centres overseas has exposed how crime groups lure victims into virtual slavery — and put them to work trying to rip you off

The scam industry is big business in Canada. How big? Although an exact figure is impossible to nail down, the total losses exceed billions of dollars every year.

Headlines coming out of Asia this week shed some light on who is making some of these fraudulent phone calls.

A crackdown on so-called scam centres in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos has freed thousands of people who were lured into virtual slavery — put to work financially exploiting people around the world through false romances, bogus investment pitches and illegal gambling schemes.

Jeff Horncastle of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has seen firsthand how those calls target people close to home.
