PUC Services Inc. operates multiple utilities within and around the City of Sault Ste. Marie, including the supply and delivery of electricity and drinking water, and energy services and the treatment of water and wastewater.
PUC offers a dynamic, challenging and rewarding work environment that encourages collaboration and innovative thinking. We are seeking a new member to join our Engineering Department. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with strong communication and an innate desire to learn and grow.
As the Water Engineer, your duties will include:
• Review preliminary layout and detailed drawings from sketches, written data, or discussions and review cost estimates and work orders for projects involving new or existing facilities for final approval by the Manager.
• Ensure the application of adequate standards and practices by staff in preparing work orders for capital works, plant maintenance, operations and service extensions.
• Ensure necessary approvals are obtained for work to proceed and that the work is coordinated with applicable authorities and other utilities.
• Verify final drawings and specifications for construction.
• Oversee layout and minor survey work, inspecting contractors’ installations and if necessary, authorizing changes during construction as required.
• Analyze final project costs and investigating variances.
• Prepare Work Orders for service extensions or upgrades to new and existing customers.
• Perform various studies, analyses and reports relating to water supply and distribution systems.
• Maintain a thorough working knowledge of PUC’s Health and Safety policies and procedures.
• Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
• Must have a sound working knowledge of engineering principles related to water distribution and supply systems and related components, with a minimum of 5 years experience, preferably in a utility, municipal or related industry.
• Familiar with applicable legislation related to the supply and delivery of drinking water.
• Ability to apply strong analytical and technical skills to solve complex technical problems.
• Must hold and maintain a valid Class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license.
• Have experience with cost estimating, developing budgets, project management and asset management.
• Ability to work independently and to take initiative.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, CAD, GIS, and databases, with good working knowledge of other applications such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Project, and Enterprise software systems (Cayenta) preferred.
• Knowledge of specific proprietary software, e.g. water modelling software, is an asset.
• Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills along with good team leadership skills, interpersonal and presentation skills.
• Ability to plan, organize, assign, prioritize, and schedule work effectively.
