JOB SUMMARY

Employment Counsellors guide clients toward goals through program access, cognitive strategies, and collaboration for self-sustainability. They assist in job preparation, offer information on community services, local labour market information, education, and training, and conduct assessments to enhance client motivation for employment readiness. Establishing transparent communication, setting achievable expectations, and providing ongoing support, Employment Counsellors ensure program deliverables are met in collaboration with the Manager of Employment Programs.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DIRECT CLIENT SERVICE
• Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate clients' skills, interests, motivation levels, and readiness for employment
• Guide clients in setting short/long-term goals based on strengths, barriers, interests, work/education
• Identify obstacles to labour market participation and reasons for change
• Provide employment preparation support by assisting clients with job search strategies, resume development, interview preparation, and effective job-seeking techniques to help them navigate the job market
• Recognize the transferability of skills across employment sectors
• Connect clients with appropriate community services, educational opportunities, and training programs, providing information on available resources that support their employment and self-sustainability goals
• Offer continuous support and guidance to clients, helping them navigate personal and professional challenges using motivational interviewing techniques to enhance their confidence, motivation, and commitment to their employment goals
• Empower clients to take ownership of their employment journey by encouraging self-advocacy, independent problem-solving, and providing them with tools and resources to enhance their self-sufficiency and long-term employment success
• Maintain organized files, including return-to-work plans and case notes
• Conduct monthly follow-up calls, compile client statistics, and generate monthly reports
• Stay updated on labour market information, identifying market gaps
• Serve as a workshop facilitator when required
• Adhere to SCCC's vision, values, policies, and procedures
• Demonstrate flexibility by working occasional flexible hours

ADMINISTRATION
• Contribute to program planning and implementation
• Accurately maintain and update client records, including case notes and service plans in the appropriate database system, ensuring that all information is properly documented and easily accessible
• Compile and organize physical client files, ensuring all relevant documents and information are included and properly filed in accordance with established protocols
• Actively participate in relevant program-related training opportunities

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Post-secondary Degree or Diploma, in a related discipline

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

• Effective communication skills, with an emphasis on reflective listening and responses
• In-depth understanding of job search practices, tools, and trends
• Experienced and skilled in conflict resolution, facilitation, and presentation skills
• Awareness of and respect for cultural diversity
• Awareness of and sensitivity to persons with disabilities and mental health disorders
• Proficient in Microsoft 365 Workspace and Adobe Acrobat; ability to learn other programs as needed
• Bilingualism is an asset
• Knowledge and/or training in Motivational Interviewing Skills is an asset

OTHER
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check
• Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and clean driving record are required
• Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada
• Proven ability to work productively in a team environment, fostering a positive and respectful atmosphere
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting team members when needed, promoting a cohesive and collaborative work culture
