Public Responsible for Arrest
Previous release from August 17th
At approx. 2:30 AM today, City Police officers performed a routine traffic stop of a motor vehicle in the
Huron St. and Cathcart St. area. During the traffic stop one of the passengers of the vehicle fled from the scene causing officers to become suspicious and search the vehicle. Officers located a canvas bag containing a sawed-off shotgun and approx 1000 rounds of shotgun and rifle ammunition. Also in the vehicle were two 12-gauge shotguns, a 308 rifle, and a 22-calibre rifle – all of which had been reported stolen in a “Break and Entry” in July.
The driver and remaining three occupants of the vehicle were arrested and charged and will be appearing in Bail Court tomorrow at 10:00 AM. The police will be issuing a warrant for the arrest of the fifth male.
UPDATE TO RELEASE:
Last evening just after 10:30 pm officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service took the fifth male who was wanted in connection to the above incident into custody without incident.
Information was received last evening that 29-year old Paul Whalen was at an address on Henrietta Street. Whalen was wanted on outstanding warrants for his involvement in the incident on August 17th. Officers from Patrol Services, the K-9 Unit and the Emergency Services Unit contained the immediate area around the house in which Whalen was in. Officers from Investigation Services were also in attendance. Traffic in the immediate area was rerouted. Officers made contact with Whalen who surrendered himself peacefully and without incident. Whalen, of 2-331 Douglas Street, will appear in bail court this morning and has been charged with four counts of possession of property obtained by crime, four counts of possession of a weapon obtained by crime, five counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, five counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, one count of possession of a prohibited firearm, five counts of careless storage of a firearm and thirteen counts of breach of probation.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to thank the public for all of the information that had been coming into the Police Service since the Service put out a public appeal for Whalen’s whereabouts on August 18th.
Impaired Driving
21-year old Lee Bibeau of 863 Second Line West was arrested last night just before midnight and charged with one count of impaired driving, one count of consume over the legal limit, one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and one count of flight from police. Just before 11:30 pm last night officers on routine patrol observed a vehicle west bound on Old Wallace Terrace. It is alleged that the driver failed to stop for the stop sign at Farwell Terrace. The vehicle continued to travel west on Wallace Terrace to Korah Road. It is alleged that the vehicle failed to stop for the stop sign at this intersection as well. The vehicle turned west onto Douglas Street at which time officers activated their roof lights to stop the vehicle. The vehicle turned onto Fourth Avenue and onto Sixth Avenue at which time it is alleged that the driver shut off his headlights and accelerated from the police. The vehicle was stopped on Fourth Avenue at which time it is alleged that the driver showed signs of impairment. Bibeau was subsequently arrested and charged. He will appear in court on October 23rd.
Report of Mischief
Yesterday morning City Police received a report of mischief. A vehicle in the 100 block of Second Line West had sugar put in its gas tank as well as oil being spread on an interlocking driveway. This occurred sometime between the 14th and 15th of September.
