SAULT POLICE USE NEW "TASER" WEAPON
The Sault Police Service made use of their new "TASER" weapon yesterday. At about 10:30 p.m., police were called to a Manitou Drive address to deal with an emotionally disturbed female. The 23-year-old was threatening to harm herself with a twelve-inch butcher knife. When they were unable to talk her into releasing the knife, the TASER was used.

The TASER is a relatively new devise that may be used by holding it directly against the person being subdued or, from a distance of up to 3 meters, two small darts are fired into the person and are connected to the weapon by two wires. The TASER then delivers 26 amps at 50,000 volts which is enough to incapacitate the offender for a period of time.

Officers advised that they couldn't have asked for better results. The female dropped the knife without injuring herself or the officers. She was arrested and taken to the Riverview Centre for treatment.
