ARRESTED FOR STOLEN CHEQUES
On or between the October 1 and the November 18, two blank cheques were stolen from an office located on the Garden River First Nation. These cheques were subsequently deposited into the personal bank account of Ronald Derasp by Derasp on the November 15 and funds withdrawn thereby defrauding the Bank of Nova Scotia of $1,983.00.
The cheques in Derasp's possession at the time of the deposit were stolen property. Both were made payable to fictitious persons with forged signatures - thereby committing the offence of uttering forged documents. On January 21st at 1:00 pm detectives from the Fraud Unit of the Investigation Service Section of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested and charged Ronald Derasp, age 25 of 13 Lachaumiere Place with Possession of Stolen Property, two counts of Uttering Forged Documents and Fraud under $5,000.00. He will appear in court Feb 24th.
DRIVING WHILE PROHIBITED
Yesterday, Carrie Rogers, age 27 of 48 Boston Avenue, was allegedly driving a 1988 Honda on Second Line East in Sault Ste Marie while being a prohibited driver for impaired driving. Patrol officers stopped Rogers shortly after 11:30 am. She was arrested and charged with Prohibited Driving. She will appear in court Feb.24th.
MAN CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED DRIVING
Yesterday at about 2:42 pm, the accused, identified as Albert Harman age 39 of 551 Government Road, Echo Bay, was involved in a minor motor vehicle collision. Officers attended at the scene of the collision at Wellington Street East and Bruce Street. Officers noted that Harman's vehicle had rear-ended a car that was turning north from Wellington Street onto Bruce Street. No injuries were sustained in the collision.
The accused was observed to have a strong odour of alcohol on his breath, glossy eyes, and was unsteady on his feet. The accused was subsequently arrested for impaired driving and taken to the station for breath tests. Officers charged Harman with Impaired Driving and Driving over .08. He will appear in court Feb 24th.
DRUG BUST
Yesterday at 2:14 pm, Drug Enforcement Officers from the Joint Forces Drug Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant at a home on Hughes Street, Sault Ste Marie. Upon searching the residence, 81.3 grams of marijuana was found hidden in a potting soil bag. Also located was an additional 309 grams of marijuana. Officers seized 49 rolling papers with hash oil smears on each.
Several articles of drug paraphernalia were located including weight scales and packaging and a cellular phone. Travis Furge, age 26 and Julie Case, age 18 of 29 Hughes Street were subsequently arrested and charged with possession of a controlled drug and possession of marijuana (85.2 grams) for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cannabis resin (49 Hash oil papers with smears) for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime (cell phone). Both Furge and Case will appear in court Feb. 24th. (No street value of the narcotics was readily available.)
TRUCK HITS BUS
Yesterday at approximately 7:00 pm, patrol officers were called to the intersection of Henrietta Street and Sherbourne Avenue for a motor vehicle collision involving a pick-up truck and a city transit bus. The truck had failed to negotiate a left turn from Henrietta Street to southbound on Sherbourne Avenue, when a city bus that was going east on Henrietta struck it.
During the investigation Officers detected the strong odour of an alcoholic beverage from the driver of the truck. Patrol officers administered a roadside-screening device to the driver of the truck. John McCaig, age 60 of 1510 Peoples Road, registered a fail. McCaig was arrested and charged with Driving over.08. He will appear in court Feb. 24th. Both vehicles received moderate damage.
ARRESTED FOR HIS OWN PROTECTION THEN BUSTED FOR DRUGS
This morning at 2:20 am, patrol officers observed an intoxicated male leaving the Mikes Mart on Wellington Street East and Bruce Street. Officers spoke to the male and determined that he was intoxicated by alcohol and considering his intoxication and the severe weather, he was in danger.
The patrol officers arrested the male for his own protection and a subsequent search of the male revealed a vial of a black tar-like substance in his pocket. The male was taken to the Police Services Building to be processed and sober up.
Officers charged the male, identified as Roger Jackson, age 43 of 555 Albert Street West, # 304, with Intoxicated in a Public Place under the Liquor Licence Act and Possession of a Controlled Drug. He will appear in court February 24th.
