Bear Sighting Downtown
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is advising the citizens in the downtown area to report any sightings of a bear to them at 949-6300 or to the Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Line at 1-866-514-2327. Yesterday morning officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and the Ministry of Natural Resources attended in the area of Cathcart Street and St. Andrew Terrace regarding a bear in the area. A trap has been set in the area. Last evening between 9 pm and 3 am this morning City Police attended in the area of Wellington Street West near Gloucester Street West, Brown Street and Estelle Street regarding a bear in the area. Officers were unable to locate the bear. Citizens are reminded that the bears are wild animals and do not approach them or corner them. If you seen them contact the Police or MNR. If the bear is acting in an aggressive manner contact City Police by calling 911.
Five People to Appear in Bail Court Today
The following persons will appear in bail court this morning:
1) Just after 5 am on the 22nd of August officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attended at an east end address after receiving a 911 call. Officers attended at the address and spoke to a female teenager who advised that her stepfather had allegedly assaulted her as well as her mother. Officers attended in the address and it is alleged that the accused attempted to prevent the officers from speaking to the female adult. The male was arrested for obstruct police. After further investigation the 39-year old male was also arrested and charged with two counts of assault. He will appear in bail court at 10 am on the 23rd of August.
2) A 20-year old male was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged with three counts of breach of a release order. It is alleged that the male sent letters and made phone calls to an ex-girlfriend while on conditions not to communicate with her.
3) A 30-year old male was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged with one count of assault and one count of threatening to cause death or bodily harm. It is alleged that on the 21st of August in the evening hours the accused assaulted his estranged wife by grabbing her by the neck as well as threatening to kill her.
4) A 45-year old male was arrested just after 12:30 am this morning and charged with one count of assault. It is alleged that the accused assaulted his common law wife by punching her in the face. The victim did not require medical treatment.
5) Officers in regards to an earlier complaint of domestic abuse arrested a 50-year old male just after 4 am this morning. It is alleged that between January to August 17th of this year, the accused assaulted his girlfriend on 4 occasions and threatened to kill her as well. The assaults including punching the victim in the head, pushing the victim and pulling her hair. During this time frame it is alleged that the accused advised the victim that she would be beaten if she called the police. The male was arrested and charged with four counts of assault and one count of threatening to cause death or bodily harm.
Attempted Break & Enter
In the early morning hours of August 22nd, around 3 am, a citizen called the police to report two suspicious males had attempted to enter a vehicle in the area of Ontario Avenue and Pim Street. The caller was able to provide a description of the males. Patrol officers attended in the area and located the males in a driveway on Wellington Street East. Both males were arrested for trespassing by night. A search of an 18-year old male resulted in property that had been stolen from a vehicle in the area. A search of the 20-year old male also resulted in some items that had been taken from a vehicle in addition to a screwdriver and a flashlight. 18-year old Curtis St. Pierre of 26 Manitou Drive was arrested and charged with one count of trespass by night and one count of theft under $5,000. 20-year old Andre Chartrand of no fixed address was arrested and charged with one count of trespass by night, one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of possession of housebreaking tools. Both males will appear in court on October 2nd.
Youth Charged with Mischief
A 15-year old youth will appear in court on September 26th. It is alleged that on the 22nd of August the accused broke a window of a vehicle belonging to a person know to the youth. The youth was charged with one count of mischief under $5,000.
Break & Enters
In the last 24 hour period City Police received three reports of break and enters:
1) Yesterday morning just after 6:30 am officers attended at Pisa Pizza on Second Line West for a break in. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.
2) A shed on Henry Street was entered between midnight and 10 am on the 22nd of August. Two chainsaws were taken.
3) Just after 3:30 am this morning RJ’s Market on Wellington Street West was broken into and an undisclosed amount of money and some cigarettes were taken. The suspect is a white male in his early 20’s who was wearing a black t-shirt and jeans as well as white running shoes. The suspect had short dark hair.

Police Pursuit
At approximately 4:30 am this morning officers on routine patrol observed a pickup truck traveling southbound on Great Northern Road with one headlight. Officers observed that the vehicle was driving at approximately 80 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. The pickup truck turned onto Wawanosh Street and officers activated their roof light in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle accelerated away from the cruiser. Officer became involved in a police pursuit and observed the suspect vehicle allegedly go through a red light on Cameron Avenue. The vehicle pulled into a driveway on Elmwood Avenue and the driver fled on foot. Officers became involved in a foot chase and the male was located hiding in a bush not far from the area. The accused was taken into custody without incident. The pursuit involved a distance of approximately 0.5 km and there was no other traffic in the area. 32-year old Jorey Jackson of 31 Stevens Street was arrested and charged with one count of flight from police and will appear in court on October 2nd. Mr. Jackson was also issued tickets under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
