City cops discovered a toiletry bag containing drugs when they busted a man as he strolled along a Sault Ste. Marie road two years ago.
Scott Carson was wanted on an outstanding warrant when the officers spotted him walking along Gloucester Street shortly after noon on Oct. 3, 2023.
He was arrested and during a subsequent search, officers found 11 grams of methamphetamine, three grams of fentanyl and three grams of cocaine.
The illicit drugs had a street value of $2,900, police said when he was charged.
Carson, 59, pleaded guilty to possession of meth and fentanyl Tuesday when he appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice.
He faced charges of possession of the two narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Federal Crown Lindsay Marshall accepted pleas to the lesser, included offence of simple possession.
The accused also was convicted of breaching a release order for failing to report to the John Howard Society bail supervision program between Dec. 24, 2024 and Feb. 24 of this year.
Marshall and defence lawyer Jessica Belisle jointly recommended a sentence of one-day time served, plus three years probation.
Her client, who has a record, "struggles significantly with addiction issues," as well as anxiety and depression, Belisle told Justice Heather Mendes.
Carson is dealing with the offences on the day after he was arrested on the breach.
"That is a quick guilty plea," Belisle said.
Mendes accepted the lawyers' submission "given the circumstances," noting Carson has taken responsibility for his actions.
