VIDEO: How to protect yourself online

Sault Police offer safety tips during Crime Prevention Week

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is recognizing Crime Prevention Week with a video series designed to help residents keep themselves, their loved ones and their property safe.

The following is the Crime Prevention message of the day:

The internet and social media are integral parts of all our daily lives, but using online resources do present risks.

Predators are constantly looking for ways to exploit others in the online space. Using proactive measures is crucial to protect your information and images online:
    •    Always activate privacy settings on any social media platform, anything you post will become public
    •    Never provide personal information to people online
    •    Disable GPS settings you have on electronic devices
    •    If you come across information or images you feel is illegal or inappropriate, you can report it using cybertip.ca
    •    Never exchange intimate images online. Once you post an image is online, it will be there forever.

Parents and guardians, be aware of the social media platforms young people in your lives are using. Understand security measures you can enact to protect them from predators.
