VIDEO: Firefighters rescue multiple people from a burning building

A witness who lives in the building said one of the people that firefighters rescued was a child

Firefighters acted quickly and rescued multiple individuals from the building.

On Friday shortly after 6:30 a.m., Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service crews responded to a call at an apartment building in the 500 block of Albert Street West.

"Upon arrival, there was visible smoke emitting from the multi-unit residential structure. Upon entering the dwelling firefighters encountered significant amounts of smoke," said Aaron Gravelle, public education officer with Sault Fire Services, in a news release.

"Firefighters acted quickly and rescued multiple individuals from the building."

A witness who lives in the building said one of the people that firefighters rescued was a child.

"The kid was unconscious," said Abdullah Patel, who lives on the first floor. The fire was located in an apartment on the third floor, he said, adding that there was also a woman in the apartment.

"I was the one who witnessed the fire out from my window and then ran out, knocking on people's doors to wake them up," Patel said.

He said it took roughly an hour for fire crews to extinguish the blaze.

Both individuals were transported to hospital.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is attending the scene. The incident remains under investigation, the release said.

There is no other information available at this time, the release said.
