An adult is accused of leaving two young children alone without food or supervision for an 'extended period' of time in April, say Sault Police.

The incident was reported to police on April 27. Police say officers were dispatched to a home where they found the children. While an investigation found that the children had been left alone, police say they were not physically injured.

Police have not said exactly how old the children were, describing them only as 'young'. Police have also not revealed the relationship between the children and the 38-year-old adult charged in the case.

The adult, who turned themselves in at the police station on June 13, has been charged with two counts of abandoning a child and two counts of criminal negligence. The criminal offence of abandoning a child applies to children under 10.

The accused has been released and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 12.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
