ESCAPED CUSTODY AT COURTHOUSE Yesterday at 9:49 am Christopher Daynard, age 25 of 145 McNabb St was in custody at the Sault Ste. Marie Courthouse awaiting a court appearance.
A door to a cell was inadvertently left unlocked and Daynard left the cell area and exited the Courthouse. Police pursued Daynard and believed he entered an apartment complex in the 200 block of Queen St. East.
Police officers contained the area and Emergency Service Personnel, assisted by the Police Services K-9 "Eagle" located Daynard in an apartment a short time later. When Daynard was arrested he was in close proximity to a quantity of hash oil and a set of nunchucka sticks (prohibited weapons).
Daynard has been charged with Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon, Escape Custody, Failing to Attend Court and two counts of Criminal Harrassment. He will appear in bail court today.
Officers also located two other males and a young female in the apartment when they arrested Daynard. A 16-year-old female from London Street, along with Nicholas Fata, age 19 of Terry Fox Place, and Michael Baranyai, age 23 of 244 Queen St. East, Apartment#2 have been arrested and charged in relation to this incident.
Police Officers from the Joint Forces Drug Unit conduct two search warrants on the apartment and their investigation produced the following:
The 16-year-old female was present when officers arrived and despite repeated demands, the accused did not allow police entry to the apartment to affect the arrest of the accused.
Once in the apartment, police observed a quantity of narcotics, cannabis resin, and a prohibited weapon in close proximity to her. She has been charged with Assisting in an Escape, Possession of a Controlled Drug and Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon. She will appear in court in mid March.
Fata too was located in the apartment on Queen Street East. Despite repeated requests, Fata did not open the door to allow Police to make an arrest. Once inside, Police observed a quantity of hash oil and a pair of nunchuka sticks in close proximity to Fata.
At the time, Fata was on an undertaking to reside with a surety at Terry Fox Place. Information was received that he had not stayed there for at least two weeks.
He was also on probation with a condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. Fata was also found in possession of four grams of cocaine individually packed.
Police also located a knife resembling an innocuous object, thus a prohibited weapon. Fata was initially arrested on an outstanding warrant request in respect of his violation of his release conditions.
He has been charged with Assisting in an Escape, two counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Drug for the Purpose of Trafficking, Breach of Probation and Breach of Undertaking. He will appear in bail court today.
Michael Baranyai was located in the apartment. Police repeatedly pounded on the door, which was not opened by any of the occupants. Once inside, Police observed a quantity of hash oil and a pair of Nunchuka sticks within the apartment of Baranyai. At the time he was on undertaking with a condition to notify change of address from Douglas Street. He failed to comply with that condition.
Further, in addition to eight five-gram vials with various amounts of hash oil, officers also located four grams of individually packaged cocaine along with corresponding debt lists and scales. Police also located a knife deemed to be prohibited due to its innocuous shape.
Police also recovered a videotape property of Neighborhood Video missing from there since October 2002. The video is valued at $25.00. Baranyai has been charged with Assisting in an Escape, two counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon, two counts of Possession of a Weapon, Possession of Stolen Property, Failing to comply with an Undertaking and two counts of Possession of a Controlled Drug for the Purpose of Trafficking. He will appear in bail court today.
MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT Yesterday, a 30-year-old male resident of a group home in the city assaulted another male in his early 60's by striking him with a plastic knife. The victim was not hurt in the assault. Police were called to the home and at 1:50 pm arrested and charged the male with Assault with a Weapon. He will appear in court March 24th.
ARRESTED FOR THREATENING DEATH Yesterday at approximately 3:00 pm, the accused, Constance Green, age 41 of 59 Francis Street, while at a residence on Albert Street East, held a knife to the throat of a 48-year-old female victim and told her that she was going to kill her.
The victim was not physically harmed in the assault. At 4:20 pm Officers were called to the residence and arrested and charged Green with Assault with a Weapon. Officers seized a folding stainless steel knife. She will appear in court in mid March.
ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT Yesterday at approximately 6:00 pm, Joseph Gibbs, age 40 of 173 Goulais Avenue threatened another adult male by stating to him to come out to fight and that he was going to kill him.
An altercation occurred at the intersection of Goulais Avenue and Wallace Terrace, where the accused went up to victim's' vehicle and kicked in the side of it. This action dented the side of the victim's truck. Police Officers arrested and charged Gibbs with Mischief under $5,000.00 and Uttering Threats. He will appear in court in mid March.
YOUNG SHOPLIFTER APPREHENDED Yesterday at approximately 12:55 pm, a 13-year-old male from Second Line West found himself in some trouble at the Walmart store. The youth is alleged to have taken from the men's wear area, a ball cap valued at $6.97, and placed it under his jacket.
The youth then left the store passing the cash counters and exited through the main doors without attempting to pay for the merchandise. Store Security apprehended the young male and Police have charged him with Theft under $5,000.00. He will appear in court in the middle of March.
BREAK & ENTERS The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is currently investigating three break and enters reported yesterday. Thieves broke into the kitchen area of St.Basils/Notre Dames Des Grand Schools yesterday morning.
A home on Hare Avenue was entered through a rear door and a CD player and hat were taken.
Thieves attempted unsuccessfully to gain entry to a home on Whitney Ave.
The Police Service is also investigating the theft of a laptop computer from the Soo Centre on March Street, along with the theft of several hundred dollars in toonies and loonies from a residence in the Root River Trailer Park.
