Break and enter, vehicle theft and more reported

On Nov. 4, a residence was broken into in the 300 block of Sussex Rd. On Dec. 6, members of the City Police Break and Enter Unit arrested 25-year-old Jordan Wagner of Cambridge Place for break and enter in regards to this incident. He will be appearing in Provincial Court Jan. 17, 2017.

Two males charged for break and enter

At approximately 1:50 p.m. on the 5th of December 2016, officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to a call regarding two males who had entered locked storage buildings that were located on the property of a downtown business. The males took a variety of tools, scrap metal and copper piping from the storage buildings. The accused males then placed the items in a cart and left the area on foot pushing the cart with them.

Officers with the Patrol Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded and located the two accused on Huron Street. Both males, 36-year-old Derek Roberts of 23 Dufferin Avenue and 58-year-old Marcel Cada of 350 Albert Street West, were arrested and charged with one count of break and enter and one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Mr. Roberts was held in custody and attended bail court on Dec. 6, 2016 while Mr. Cada was released with a court date of Jan. 9, 2017.

Attempted theft of motor vehicle

Just before 8 a.m. on the 5th of December 2016, officers with the Patrol Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attended a downtown area and arrested 35-year-old Shawn Mearow of no fixed address regarding the attempted theft of a motor vehicle. The victims had started their motor vehicle and left it running in order to warm it prior to driving. While the vehicle was unattended, the accused (allegedly) entered the driver’s side and attempted to drive the vehicle away.

The accused was interrupted by the victims and he attempted to flee the scene. The accused was held at the scene by a citizen and police were contacted. Offices quickly responded and placed Mr. Mearow in custody. Upon his arrest, Mr. Mearow (allegedly) struggled with the officers and would not comply with their commands. Officers searched the accused and found that he was in possession of a flick knife that was capable of being opened with centrifugal force and a small amount of a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

As a result, Shawn Mearow has been charged with one count of theft of a motor vehicle, one count of resisting arrest, one count of possession of a prohibited weapon, and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind the public to keep a close eye on running vehicles. Valuables should not be left inside of an unattended vehicle. If you know that you are going to be away from your vehicle, your keys should be kept with you.

Road closure

On Dec. 5, 2016 at 4:15 p.m., a single motor vehicle with three occupants struck a fibreglass utility pole on Northern Avenue. All three occupants were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

As a result of the collision, the motor vehicle suffered extensive damage to the front end and a utility pole on Northern Avenue was broken at the base.

To ensure the safety of the public, Northern Avenue will be closed between Pine Street and Willow Avenue while the utility pole is repaired. Anyone with information about this collision is asked to contact the Traffic Services Department of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Male arrested for mischief

On the 5th of December 2016 Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service located and arrested a 34-year-old male who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for mischief under $5,000 relating to a domestic violence incident.

It is alleged that on the 17th of September 2016, the accused attended his girlfriend’s residence and kicked in the rear door causing damage to the door and door frame. On that date the accused fled the scene on foot before police arrival.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 9 2017.
