Tampered ATM Machines

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has investigated a number of incidents where Automated Banking Machines have been tampered with. During the last three weekends unknown suspects have tampered with ATM's throughout the city in what appears to be a "Skimming" operation. Skimming occurs when equipment is attached to a machine to capture the account information encoded in the black magnetic strip on the rear of the bank card. A remote camera is hidden so the PIN can be captured and this information can be used to duplicate your card and access your account.

Reminder

The public is being asked to be vigilant when using ATM's on weekends or after hours and be suspicious if an "out of order" sign is posted on any ATM directing them to use another. Devices are usually a false front added to the machine at the card insertion sight that closely resembles the machine itself. If you encounter such a device or if it appears the machine you are using has been tampered with at all, please call police immediately. If you see anyone in the area who is acting suspicious get a description of them as well to provide to the officers who attend. Remember to always protect you PIN.
