Trio accused of stealing cheques, defrauding victim of $20K

Sault Ste. Marie Police say they have charged three people with fraud as they allege stolen cheques were used to make withdrawals.

One of the three has also been charged with forgery.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.

All three are scheduled to appear in court later this year, according to the following news release:

On September 18, 2023, a detective in the Fraud Unit charged 25-year-old Andrea Beckett with fraud under $5,000. On September 21, 2023, they charged 33-year-old Ayla Pigeon with fraud over $5,000. On October 5, 2023, they charged 51-year-old Colleen Martin with fraud under $5,000 and forgery.

In April 2023, it was discovered that five stolen cheques belonging to the victim were used to make fraudulent withdrawals totaling $20,677.50.

Andrea Beckett is accused of defrauding the victim of $2,002. This accused was charged with fraud under $5,000. They turned themselves in on September 17, 2023, and were arrested. They were released on an undertaking and are scheduled to appear in court on November 27, 2023.

Ayla Pigeon is accused of defrauding the victim of $10,500.50. This accused was charged with fraud over $5,000. They turned themselves in on September 21, 2023, and were arrested. They were released on an undertaking and are scheduled to appear in court on November 27, 2023.

Colleen Martin is accused of defrauding the victim of $2,100 and forging a cheque in their name. This accused is charged with fraud under $5,000 and forgery. They turned themselves in on October 5, 2023, and were arrested. They were released on an undertaking and are scheduled to appear in court on December 11, 2023.
